Dentist Trip

Went to the dentist with the whole family yesterday.  Here's a funny conversation:

"Dad, I haven't had any cavities in my entire life (7 years)" said one son. He continued: "And Mom has had one cavity."

I replied: "I've had about 20 cavities in my life."

Son: " I bet that's why you married mom!"

I hadn't thought of that. . .but I can add it to my very long list of reasons!  Oh, and no cavities for anyone yesterday.

Scout Trip

Went to Camp Tracy with John, Reed, and some other 11-yr-old scouts this past weekend. It was a lot of fun. The boys learned how to shoot .22 rifles, archery, lashings, knots, first aid, nature, rowing, drug awareness, flag ceremonies, and other things. A highlight of the experience was witnessing the retirement of a flag. Did you know there are only two groups that can retire the American flag: the Boy Scouts and the Armed Forces? This gave me a renewed sense of gratitude for those that serve our country, and for the blessing I enjoy from being a citizen of the United States of America.

I am grateful for the Scouting program and those that serves therein. Truly, it is an inspired program, designed to strengthen boys, families, and the nation. I look forward to many more scouting experiences as my boys continue through the program.

I like this:

Minnie Louise Haskins' words:

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: "Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown." And he replied, "Go out into the darkness and put thine hand into the hand of God. That shall be to thee better than a light, and safer than a known way." [John Bartlett, comp., Familiar Quotations (Toronto, 1955), p. 881]

Honesty

Went to Anna's second and third grade program at the Elementary School yesterday. The program focused on honesty, telling the story of the Emperor's Seed and the story of Abraham Lincoln. After a rendition of the stories, some of the children recited the Gettysburg Address. I cried as I remembered how blessed our nation is to have had President Lincoln. Thank God for Abraham Lincoln. God Bless America.

Hyrum, the Compliment King

We've watched Iron Chef recently, and the kids have taken to rating the food that we've prepared and eaten. Yesterday, they even had their own version of Iron Chef, using Cheese as the secret ingredient. So, this evening for FHE, we had a brownie, pudding, cool whip dish. . .

Dad: Hey guys, what do you think about the dessert?

Reed: Two thumbs up!

John: Two thumbs up!

Hyrum: If I were a centipede mixed with a whale, I would give it a whole-body-plus-one -hundred thumbs up.

Thanks, Hyrum.
